What to wear in Agadir on a port day comes down to two things: dress comfortably and modestly for town, and dress practically for whatever you are riding. Agadir is a relaxed resort city, so there is no strict dress code for tourists, but covering shoulders and knees is respectful in the centre and the souks. For a camel, quad or horse ride, closed shoes matter more than anything else. Here is what to wear, what to bring ashore and what to leave on the ship.
What to wear in Agadir: the town dress code for tourists
Agadir is not Marrakech's medina. It was largely rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, the centre is modern, and the long beach and promenade are full of visitors in summer clothes. Nobody expects you to dress like a local. Still, Morocco is a Muslim country, and a little thought goes a long way:
- In town, the souk and the Kasbah hill: clothes that cover your shoulders and reach about the knee are the respectful choice for both men and women. A T-shirt with shorts or a skirt to the knee is fine. A light shirt or scarf you can throw over a vest top solves most situations.
- On the beach and the promenade: beachwear is normal on the sand. Put a top on when you walk back into the streets or sit down in a café.
- At a mosque: non-Muslims generally cannot enter mosques in Morocco, so you will usually see them from outside. Dress modestly nearby anyway.
There is no need to cover your hair. Women travelling alone or together may simply find that longer, looser clothes attract less attention in busy markets.
If you plan to explore on foot, think about your feet first. Souk El Had is a large market with a lot of walking between stalls, and the Kasbah hill (Agadir Oufella) is exposed, with views over the bay and often a breeze. Comfortable shoes you have already worn in, a hat and a layer for the top of the hill will serve you better than anything smart. Our Agadir in one day guide suggests how to fit the sights around a ride.
What to wear for a camel ride
Camel rides are the gentlest option, but you are still sitting astride a saddle on a tall animal for about an hour or more, through eucalyptus trails, dunes and sandy tracks.
- Closed shoes. Trainers are ideal. Flip-flops slip off when you mount and dismount, and sand gets everywhere.
- Trousers or longer shorts. Something that stops the inside of your legs rubbing on the saddle. Leggings, light trousers or knee-length shorts all work. Very short shorts and tight skirts are uncomfortable.
- A light scarf. Near the river and the coast, wind can lift sand. A scarf over nose and mouth makes a real difference, and it doubles as sun protection for your neck.
- A layer. On a 10:00 ride in winter the morning can feel cool before the sun climbs.
This applies to the 2-hour camel nature ride to the Souss River and to every other camel ride we offer. Handlers lead each camel, and you do not need any riding experience.
What to wear for horse riding
The horse riding on Tamri Beach trip is the one where clothing really matters:
- Long trousers, not shorts. Jeans are acceptable; stretchy riding or walking trousers are better.
- Closed shoes with a small heel if you have them, such as walking boots. Trainers work for beginners. Sandals do not.
- A snug top that will not flap, plus a light jacket. The ride is in the late afternoon by the sea, and it is cooler on the way back.
Tell us your riding level when you book. Beginners and experienced riders are both welcome, and the ride starts with a lesson. Our beach horse riding guide explains which ships have the hours for it.
What to wear on a quad bike
The quad bike and camel ride is the dustiest day out:
- Clothes that can get dirty. Dust and sand will cover you. Leave white linen on the ship.
- Closed shoes, always. Your feet sit close to the wheels.
- Long sleeves or a light jacket protect your arms from sun and grit.
- A scarf or buff for your face. A helmet and goggles are provided, so you do not need to bring your own.
The quad is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems.
Dressing for a meal or an evening ride
The camel ride with BBQ dinner includes a Moroccan barbecue or a traditional Moroccan menu with mint tea. There is no dress code for the meal; you eat in what you rode in. If you take a later start, bring a warmer layer. Winter evenings in Agadir are noticeably cooler than the middle of the day, especially close to the river and the sea. On ships with long calls, our sunset camel ride guide shows which evening options fit.
Agadir weather on a winter port day
Most cruise calls fall between autumn and spring. The pattern is easy to plan for:
- Mornings and evenings are cooler. A fleece or light jacket is worth carrying.
- The middle of the day can be warm, and the sun is strong even when the air feels mild. Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat are essential, not optional.
- Wind near the coast and the dunes is common. A scarf is the single most useful thing you can pack.
Layers beat one heavy coat. You will put them on and take them off several times during the day.
What to bring ashore in Agadir: the packing list
A small cross-body bag or backpack is enough. Inside it:
- Cruise card and photo ID. You need both to get back into the port. Rules vary by ship, so take whatever your daily programme asks for.
- Phone, charged, with our WhatsApp number saved. The exact meeting point at the cruise terminal gate is sent by WhatsApp the day before.
- A little cash in dirhams. Your ride is paid online in euros, so you need no dirhams for it. Small change is handy for tips, a drink or a souvenir; cards are not accepted everywhere in town.
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat.
- A light scarf.
- Water. Especially on dusty or sunny rides.
- A light layer for the cooler morning or evening.
What to leave on the ship
- Valuable jewellery and watches. You do not need them on a camel, and sand gets into everything.
- Most of your cards and cash. Take one card and a little cash.
- Big camera bags. A phone is easier to handle on a moving animal. If you bring a camera, use a neck strap.
- Anything you would hate to lose. Agadir is relaxed, but the usual care with phones and bags in crowds applies.
