Paradise Valley Agadir is a name many cruise guests hear before they arrive, and the valley is genuinely lovely, but it costs far more of your port time than a camel ride. Expect roughly an hour or more on the road each way, partly on a winding mountain road, and pools that depend on recent rain. A camel ride from the cruise terminal takes 2 to 4 hours plus a 30-minute drive back, and works on almost every call. We should say upfront: we do not sell Paradise Valley trips, so we have no reason to talk you out of it if it suits your day.
This guide compares the two honestly, so you can decide which is right for your ship and your group.
Paradise Valley Agadir: what it actually is
Paradise Valley is a palm-lined valley with natural rock pools in the foothills of the High Atlas, inland from the coast to the north-east of Agadir, in the Imouzzer Ida Outanane area. People go for the scenery, a short walk along the valley floor and, when there is enough water, a swim in the pools.
Three things shape a visit from a cruise ship:
- The drive. It is reached by road, and part of the route is a winding mountain road. Count roughly an hour or more each way, depending on traffic.
- The water. The pools depend on recent rainfall. After a dry spell they can be low; after rain they look their best. Nobody can promise what you will find on your date.
- Organisation. You arrange it yourself, usually with a grand taxi, or join an excursion sold on board. Beige grand taxis take up to six people and are the usual choice for longer trips. Agree the full price, including waiting time and the return, before you set off.
Paradise Valley or a camel ride: side by side
| Paradise Valley | Camel ride from the port | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the road | Roughly an hour or more each way, partly mountain road | Short transfer; about 30 minutes back to the terminal |
| Time needed in total | Most of a short port day | 2.5 to 4.5 hours gate to gate, depending on the ride |
| What you see | Palm valley, rock pools, mountain foothills | Eucalyptus trails, dunes, the Souss River estuary |
| Depends on weather | Yes: pools depend on recent rain | Little; flamingos are seasonal (usually November to April) and never guaranteed |
| Who organises it | You, or the ship's excursion team | We do: pickup and drop-off at the gate included |
| Price | Whatever you agree with your driver, plus extras | From 18 € per person, paid online |
| Return margin | Up to you to manage | Planned back 60 minutes before all-aboard |
How much port time each option needs
Use our standard maths: your earliest pickup is arrival plus 30 minutes, and you want to be back at the terminal at least 60 minutes before all-aboard. With the default all-aboard of 30 minutes before departure, a few examples from our current calendar look like this:
- 08:00-22:00 (AIDAblu, AIDAmar, Mein Schiff 3, 7 and Relax): about 12 usable hours. Enough time for Paradise Valley if you want it.
- 09:00-18:00 (Marella Discovery 2): about 7 hours. Subtract two hours or more of driving and you have a few hours in the valley, if traffic behaves.
- 09:00-16:00 (Explora II): about 5 hours. Paradise Valley becomes a rushed round trip.
- 11:00-18:00 (Seven Seas Navigator): about 5 hours, starting late. Very tight.
- 08:00-14:00 (Azamara Onward): about 4 hours. Not realistic.
The longer the drive, the more the return depends on traffic, and the coast road into Agadir can be slow in the late afternoon. The ship does not wait for passengers on independent outings. Our page on ship excursions vs independent tours explains the trade-offs if you are thinking of an on-board excursion instead.
Can you combine Paradise Valley with a camel ride?
On short calls, no. There is not enough time to do both safely, and fixing a ride time on the same day as an unpredictable mountain drive is a recipe for stress.
On a long 08:00-22:00 call it is possible in principle, because the camel ride has afternoon start times. But we do not plan or sell the valley part, and we cannot hold a ride slot if your driver is late back from the mountains. If you try both, leave generous gaps, and be aware that a missed ride inside 48 hours of the start is not refundable. Most guests are happier choosing one and doing it well.
The camel rides, in brief
All of these include pickup and drop-off at the cruise terminal gate. Your call page only shows the start times that fit your ship.
2-hour camel nature ride, 18 €
The 2-hour nature ride is the simplest choice. About 1 hour 30 of riding on eucalyptus trails to the Souss River, photo stops and mint tea, with a handler for every camel. It suits children and first-time riders. Start times are 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 16:00, so at least one fits almost every ship we see.
Flamingo River camel ride, 18 €
The Flamingo River ride crosses coastal dunes and eucalyptus forest to Oued Souss, past the village of Aghroud Bensergao, with mint tea and Moroccan pastries at the camp. It starts at 10:00 and we plan it at 3 hours.
Quad bike and camel ride, 19 €
The quad and camel ride gives you an automatic quad after a safety briefing, a camel ride across the sand and mint tea in a Berber tent. We plan it at 4 hours. It is not suitable for pregnant women or people with back problems.
Quad, camel and sandboarding on the Takate dunes, 20 €
If you were drawn to Paradise Valley for the landscape, the Takate dunes trip is the closest we offer. You ride a quad for about 1 hour 30 through argan country to the coast, then ride a camel on the Takate beach dunes for about 15 minutes and try sandboarding for about 15 minutes, with mint tea and cakes. The team speaks English, French, Spanish and Arabic. Quad drivers must be 16 or over, and it is not for children under 16, pregnant women or people with back problems. We plan it at 4 hours: on Marella Discovery 2 it fits at 10:00 or 11:00, on Explora II only at 10:00.
Who should choose which
Choose Paradise Valley if:
- your ship stays most of the day, ideally a long call;
- you love walking and natural scenery and do not mind a mountain road;
- it has rained recently, or you are happy with the valley even if the pools are low;
- you are comfortable arranging your own transport and managing your own return.
Choose a camel ride if:
- your call is 7 hours or shorter;
- you want a fixed price, pickup at the gate and a planned return time;
- you are travelling with children or first-time riders;
- you want to see the coast, dunes and the Souss River without spending hours in a car.
If you are building a whole day, our Agadir in one day guide has sample plans, the port-to-town guide covers taxis and shuttles, and the camel ride price guide explains each ride in detail. The Agadir port guide covers the gate and what to bring.
Make the most of a short port day
Find your ship and date in the cruise calendar to see which rides fit your hours. If your time is limited, the 2-hour camel nature ride gives you countryside, a river and a camel in a fraction of the time a mountain round trip takes.
